New ISSF grip rule explained by Morini
The 2026 ISSF rules for pistol (10m and 25m) focus on stricter grip regulations and updated finals formats to take effect on January 1, 2026. Key changes include mandatory restrictions on grip contours (length, angles, and palm rest) to ensure the wrist remains completely free, new “live aiming” for finals, and restructured mixed team events, aiming to reduce the duration of finals.
Key 2026 ISSF Pistol Rule Updates
- Grip Regulations: Stricter rules in chapter 8.4 regarding grip configuration. The “horn” below the rear sight is limited to 40 mm (10m) or 30 mm (25m) with specific angle requirements (45°+), and the thumb ball edge must angle downward.
- Palm Rest Restrictions: The trailing edge of the palm rest must be at a 30° or more angle relative to the perpendicular of the rest.
- Live Aiming: Introduction of live aiming technology for both 10m Air Pistol and 25m Pistol events during finals.
- Finals Formats: Revised formats for 10 Olympic events and mixed team finals, with eight athletes qualifying for individual finals.
- Equipment Control: Air pistols and sport pistols must fit in a standard test box, adhering to updated, tighter tolerances for grips.
